Az looked so hopeful – his brows had done that rise into the hairline thing, which seemed so out of character. His eyes, despite sucking all the light in the room into darkness, were wide and eager.

Such a bummer she really didn’t want to go.

Casey spread her hands, palms up. ‘Sorry, Az. This girl isn’t going anywhere.’

The brows sank, the eyes lost their lustre. ‘I need to bring you to the Hereafter.’

Casey folded her arms across her chest. ‘And I need to stay right here.’

Az drew himself up. Darkness flooded him, shrouding him in black wings. His eyes gleamed, tiny sparks in the night. Lightning flashed behind the curtains and threw his cheekbones into stark relief.

‘Casey Simmons.’ The voice vibrated through her with a resonance that set her teeth on edge. ‘You will come with me to the Hereafter.’

Casey took in the dark glory designed to intimidate her, and waved a hand at him. ‘Cut the theatrics, Az. You’re the Angel of Death, not the great and powerful Oz.’
